Lionel Messi Helps PSG Top Ligue 1 Table
Lionel Messi has returned to top-flight football with flying colours after winning the FIFA World Cup last year with Argentina, and his first order of business was making sure that Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) topped the Ligue 1 table.
The 35-year-old football superstar did not see the Red-and-Blues’ first three matches following a rest spell after the World Cup.
However, he slid into the new year with a hero’s welcome from the home crowd as his team took on Angers SCO at Parc des Princes on Wednesday, 11 January.
PSG were in control throughout the game, with the visitors showing frustration early on and striker Hugo Ekitike, filling in for a resting Kylian Mbappe, capitalised on their errors to put the Parisians in front at the five-minute mark.
Angers showed a hunger to get back in the second half, but ultimately Messi denied that drive by finding the back of the net at the 72nd-minute mark.
After the match, coach Christophe Galtier commented: “Messi has recovered well. He is relaxed and in great shape physically, and with Leo the team looks different.”
The victory moved PSG to first place in the Ligue 1 competition with 47 points, six points clear of second place Lens.
